Too Late To Achieve Any Goals This Year? Read This

In partnership with

In a few weeks, we will be celebrating another year. Traditionally, most people begin the new year with a list of goals to achieve. This is known as the New Year Resolution. Entrepreneurs are not excluded from this tradition. I am sure you had goals you want to accomplish whether in your business or personal life.

However, as the year winds to an end, you feel the weight of failure bearing down on you. While it is true that there is little time left, the situation is not completely hopeless. Highly successful people develop ways of achieving the impossible in a ridiculously short time. Here are two techniques that can halp.

The Reality Distortion Field

If you are not familiar with this term, it may sound like something from a science fiction movie. However, this was a technique used by Steve Jobs to achieve what many said was impossible. Although Jobs himself didn’t coin the term, he mastered how to use it, so much so that it influenced those around him. So what is the reality distortion field?

Simply put, it’s an ability to bend reality to suit your purpose. The term was originally used in Star Trek and referenced by Apple’s Software developer Bud Tribble. According to Bud, Steve Jobs had a way of making you believe in an impossible reality. Like when he asked Bud to develop and ship software in just 10 months. Here’s a short dialogue between Bud and Jobs, after the latter revealed the official schedule for developing the software;

“Bud, that's crazy!" We've hardly even started yet. There's no way we can get it done by then."

"I know," he responded, in a low voice, almost a whisper.

"You know? If you know the off-base schedule, why don't you correct it?"

Although Steve Jobs didn’t invent the reality distortion field, he popularised it and the more people became interested in it, the more they tried to learn more about it and apply it. Here’s the summary, anybody can learn to use the reality distortion field.

You may not be as charismatic as Steve Jobs but the true essence of the RDF lies in the ability to block out distractions that could stop you from achieving your goal. Since the RDF has to do with the mind, the distractions referred to here are more psychological than physical. Examples are fear and doubt. As Henry Ford said;

Whether you think you can or you think you can’t, you’re right.

Henry Ford

Reality distortion is all about changing your perception of reality. It means pushing yourself beyonde what you believ to be your limit and aiming for what scares you. This is not going to be easy, but with practice, you’ll become better at tweaking your thoughts, hence your perception of reality as a whole. With this mindset, you can achieve more in a short time.

Monk Mood

Another technique high achievers use is called Monk Mood. This technique is more effective against physical distractions. It involves locking in and focusing on nothing else except your goals.. While our society glorifies multitasking, it has been proven scientifically that doing so many things simultaneously weakens our focus and thus the outcome of our actions.

Focusing on a single task is the most effective and efficient way of attaining a higher level of productivity. Flow state, one of the most talked about mental states can only be achieved by focusing on a singular task for a long time.

Don’t Forget

The reality distortion field and monk mode are techniques that have proven effective for achieving maximum productivity. However, if taken to the extreme, they can have a negative impact on health and overall well-being. If you are new to these techniques, make sure to take it gradually until you get the hang of it.
